Partnership challenged to do more to tackle Climate Change
A member of the Board of the South Somerset Together (SST) has urged other SST member organisations to "stop pussyfooting around" when it comes to thinking about what local organisations can do to tackle climate change. Joe Burlington, Chairman of South Somerset Climate Action and a member of the Somerset Strategic Partnership Environmental Leaders Group, delivered this challenge to a recent meeting of the Board. New Voluntary Sector Apprenticeships in South Somerset
An innovative new scheme has helped six local people in South Somerset into one-year apprenticeships with voluntary and community organisations. The apprenticeships are designed to help adults back into employment who do not currently work, but who don't satisfy all of the criteria of the definition of unemployment, for example, because of family responsibilities or early retirement. Health grant scheme opens its doors to new projects
Health projects look set for a kick-start this month as a South Somerset District Council-led Healthy Living fund opens its doors for new grant applications. Over the past year, nine new and exciting healthy living projects were given funding and the Health and Wellbeing Partnership - which involves South Somerset District Council, Somerset Primary Care Trust and Somerset County Council - is now inviting more groups and projects to get in touch. Strategic Partnership helps young people to B Active
An innovative scheme to give free access to leisure activities to young people in need got under way at the beginning of the year. B Active is designed to improve young people's physical and emotional health by providing them with three months free access to swimming lessons or gym membership at local leisure centres. Strategic Partnership to part-fund new apprenticeships in South somerset

Action plan for sustainable communities in South Somerset
A five-year action plan is being developed by the local strategic partnership, South Somerset Together, to help to secure a sustainable future for south Somerset communities. The seven-point action plan will be incorporated into the draft South Somerset Sustainable Community Plan, 'Shaping South Somerset', that is due go out for further consultation in the new year. It deals with a number of key issues, such as creating incentives for people and organisations to reduce waste and carbon emissions, and developing joined-up transport policies and investment in alternatives to road transport.
